About API Documentation Generators
Turn an API description into a usable reference
API documentation generators help teams explain endpoints, parameters, authentication and responses without writing every reference page from scratch. Some render a specification; others use AI to draft missing explanations or read source code. Check the actual input before choosing: support for an OpenAPI file does not automatically mean a tool can discover an undocumented API.
Compare the workflow, not only the generated page
Start with one representative endpoint that includes authentication, nested data and an error response. Inspect the generated descriptions and run the example against a test environment. Evaluate whether readers can search, try requests and move from a quickstart to the reference. A downloadable Markdown file and a hosted developer portal serve different publishing needs.
For ongoing maintenance, check how changes are detected, whether manual edits survive regeneration, and who approves publication. SDK generation and MCP access can be useful additions, but should be verified separately.
Check costs and data access
Compare endpoint limits, AI credits, custom domains, private documentation and versioning. A free documentation site may still have a limited AI allowance. Review what specifications or source code leave your environment, which providers process them, and whether a local or self-hosted option covers the features you need.
