Leonardo AI is an AI image generator and visual production platform for creating, editing, upscaling and animating digital assets. It combines Leonardo-hosted models such as Lucid and Phoenix with selected third-party image and video models, allowing creators to move between text-to-image, image editing, character design and video generation in one workspace.

The platform is aimed at designers, marketers, game developers, illustrators and production teams that need more control than a simple prompt box. It offers a usable free plan, while paid subscriptions add private generations, larger token allowances, custom model training and relaxed generation on selected models.

Leonardo AI pricing

Leonardo AI uses a freemium token system. Prices below were checked on August 20, 2026 and exclude tax. Annual billing advertises savings of up to 20%, while the following figures are the displayed monthly prices.

• Free — $0: 150 Fast Tokens per day, public creations, basic quality settings, one personal collection and limited access to some advanced workflows.
• Essential — $12 per month: 8,500 Fast Tokens per month, a 25,500-token rollover bank, private generations, unlimited collections, ten personal AI models and two simultaneous generations.
• Premium — $30 per month: 25,000 Fast Tokens, a 75,000-token bank, 20 personal models, three simultaneous generations and relaxed image generation on selected models after tokens run out.
• Ultimate — $60 per month: 60,000 Fast Tokens, a 180,000-token bank, 50 personal models, six simultaneous generations and selected relaxed image and video generation.
• Teams: Starter is currently $72 per month for the displayed three-seat configuration; Growth is $144 per month. Team workspaces pool tokens and keep generations private to the team.
• API: Pay-as-you-go access starts with $5 in API credit. API credit does not expire, and standard access supports up to ten concurrent generations.

How Leonardo AI tokens work

Tokens pay for image generation, video generation, background removal, upscaling and other compute-intensive actions. There is no fixed exchange rate between one token and one image: cost changes with the model, output count, resolution, settings and number of references. The interface shows the cost before generation.

Free accounts receive 150 tokens every 24 hours. Unused free tokens expire rather than accumulating.

Unused monthly paid tokens move into a Rollover Bank up to the plan's capacity, which is currently equivalent to three months of plan tokens. Paid users can buy top-up tokens; these do not expire but can only be used while a paid subscription remains active.

Premium and Ultimate subscribers can continue generating with eligible Leonardo-hosted models at a relaxed pace after their token balance reaches zero. Relaxed jobs have lower priority and reduced concurrency. Third-party models, including many GPT Image, Nano Banana, Ideogram, Kling, Sora and Veo options, still require tokens every time. Flow State is also excluded from relaxed generation.

Commercial use and ownership

Leonardo AI permits commercial use on both free and paid plans, but ownership and privacy differ substantially.

Under the current Terms of Service, paid subscribers own the intellectual-property rights Leonardo can assign in content created while subscribed. When Private Mode is enabled, Leonardo may process that private content only to provide the service and says it will not use it for model training or product development without written consent.

On the Free plan, Leonardo owns the intellectual-property rights it can claim in generated outputs. Free users receive a non-exclusive, royalty-free commercial-use licence, but their work is public and other users may access or reuse it through platform features.

Any content left public gives Leonardo a broad, perpetual licence to reproduce, modify, distribute, sublicense, promote and use it to improve services and train AI models. You are responsible for having the rights and permissions required for every uploaded image, brand, character, person or other input.

AI outputs are not guaranteed to be unique, accurate or non-infringing. Leonardo explicitly disclaims warranties of title and non-infringement, so commercial users should review important assets and avoid assuming that an AI output automatically creates enforceable copyright.

Privacy and data use

Leonardo's Privacy Policy covers prompts, uploaded images and videos, generated content, metadata, account information and usage data.

Free creations are public by default. They may appear in Leonardo's feed, search results and external search-engine indexes. Copies may remain in caches or with other users after the original is removed.

Leonardo may analyse public content for service improvement and machine-learning training. Paid Private Content is excluded from Leonardo's model training. Data may be shared with Canva group companies and vendors involved in hosting, storage, analytics, data labelling, machine learning, billing, security, advertising and support.

Information is stored in the United States and may be processed in Australia and other countries where Leonardo or its providers operate. Personal information is retained while an account is active or while a legitimate business or legal purpose remains. Team administrators can access, move, delete or reassign content inside a team workspace.

Important limitations

• Free generations are public and can be indexed, copied or remixed.
• Free users receive commercial-use permission but do not receive the same output ownership as paid subscribers.
• The help center says deleting generated images requires a paid subscription, although uploaded reference images can be deleted separately.
• The interface, AI support bot and human support are currently optimized for English; full multilingual interface and non-English support are not offered.
• Free users can encounter stricter content moderation than paid users.
• Video actions generally consume more tokens than image generation.
• Relaxed generation excludes third-party models and Flow State, and queues may slow during high demand.
• A custom model or Element trained inside Leonardo cannot currently be downloaded for use elsewhere.
• Model availability, token prices and third-party infrastructure can change.
