What is Phonable, in plain English?

Phonable is an AI voicemail app for iPhone that handles calls you cannot answer. The caller hears your greeting and can leave a message; you receive the recording, a transcript and a short AI summary. If automatic replies are enabled, the caller also gets a text explaining what to do next. It is useful when meetings, driving or time away keep you from picking up.

The website explains the service and links to the iPhone app. Phonable uses your carrier's conditional call forwarding to replace the usual voicemail destination. People still call your existing number. When you answer normally, Phonable is not involved. The service is operated by Progresso ICT in the Netherlands.

Set up a missed-call workflow on your own number

  1. Download the app from its official App Store listing. The US listing checked on October 12, 2026 requires iOS 16.4 or later and lists English as the app language.
  2. Register with your phone number and verify it by SMS. Follow the app's guided steps for forwarding unanswered, busy or unreachable calls.
  3. Record a greeting, write an automatic text reply and choose the mode that matches your availability. Pro also supports typed greetings spoken by an AI voice.
  4. As a practical check, call from another phone and leave a short test message. Review the recording, transcript, summary and text-delivery indication before relying on the setup.

Check your carrier's forwarding support and charges first. The public site does not provide a complete supported-country or carrier list. The app also provides a way to disable forwarding and return missed calls to carrier voicemail; avoid assuming that simply uninstalling it reverses your network settings.

Read the message and decide how to respond

Voicemail entries contain the original recording, full transcript and AI summary. A summary notification helps you decide whether to open the message now or follow up later. You can listen at a preferred playback speed and call or message back from the voicemail. The call timeline also shows missed calls where the caller left no recording.

The automatic SMS is useful in that last case: a caller can receive your reply after hanging up even without leaving a message. Each caller receives at most one such text per hour. Replies consume the plan's SMS credits and are not sent to landlines or unsupported countries. Important names, dates and commitments should be checked against the audio because transcription and summaries are not guaranteed to be error-free.

Match greetings and replies to your availability

A mode pairs the greeting callers hear with the text they receive. You can switch between work, driving, gym or weekend situations, or keep a mode active temporarily. Basic and Pro add scheduled switching for selected days and hours. This helps avoid sending a weekday callback promise while you are away for the weekend.

You can record your own greeting. Pro's AI greetings let you type the wording and choose a voice and tone instead. The documented workflow is greeting, voicemail and follow-up text; there is no verified promise that Phonable conducts an open-ended conversation or books appointments.

Free use, subscriptions and carrier costs

Checked October 12, 2026: Test Drive is free, with a monthly voicemail and text allowance, up to two modes and a shared community line. Basic increases allowances, supports up to five modes and adds scheduling. Pro adds the largest allowances, unlimited modes, AI greetings and a dedicated forwarding line. Unlimited modes do not mean unlimited voicemail or SMS.

Basic and Pro have monthly or yearly subscriptions. Exact prices appear in your local App Store; the public website does not specify every message allowance. Apple handles subscription billing and cancellation, and subscriptions renew unless cancelled. Your carrier may separately charge for forwarding. See the service terms before choosing a plan.

Where are contacts and voicemail processed?

Contacts are used locally on your iPhone to display names and are not uploaded. Voicemail processing is different: the privacy policy identifies Twilio for calls and SMS, Google Gemini for transcription and summaries, and Expo for notifications. This is not an entirely on-device voicemail service.

The policy says voicemail and activity remain until removed from history or the account is deleted. Account deletion is requested by email. Review these conditions before forwarding sensitive conversations.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a new number or SIM?

No. Callers use your existing number. Phonable receives missed calls through conditional forwarding; a paid dedicated forwarding line does not require you to announce a new personal number.

Can I read voicemail instead of listening?

Yes. A full transcript and short summary accompany the recording. Use the original audio when a detail matters or the text seems wrong.

Can I try it without a subscription?

Yes. Test Drive provides limited free use. More modes, scheduling and AI greetings have plan requirements, and carrier forwarding fees may still apply.
