What this tool does

Synthesia AI avatar generator at a glance

Synthesia is an AI avatar generator built primarily for business videos, training, enablement and internal communications. It turns a script, prompt, document or PowerPoint presentation into a scene-based video presented by a stock or personal AI avatar, with generated speech, captions and visual assets.

Unlike cinematic text-to-video tools, Synthesia focuses on presenter-led content that would otherwise require a camera, actor, microphone and repeated recording sessions. Its editor can also import existing images, video, voiceovers and presentation files, making it useful for onboarding, product education, compliance training, sales enablement and multilingual knowledge sharing.

What can you create with Synthesia?

Synthesia combines avatar generation, AI voices and a structured video editor:

  • Select from stock, synthetic and customizable AI presenters.
  • Create a Personal Avatar from a photo or recorded video on paid plans.
  • Pair a personal avatar with a cloned version of its owner's voice.
  • Generate speech using more than 1,000 voices across over 160 languages and accents.
  • Draft scripts and scenes from prompts, documents, web content or PowerPoint presentations.
  • Add multiple avatars to a scene on eligible plans.
  • Upload images, videos, infographics and recorded voiceovers.
  • Add automatic closed captions, music, templates and brand assets.
  • Dub existing videos, preserve a speaker's voice and accent, and optionally synchronize mouth movement.
  • Build interactive videos with calls to action, branching and quizzes on eligible plans.
  • Use API, branded video pages and bulk personalization on higher plans.
  • Export SCORM packages for learning management systems with Enterprise.

The exact avatar library and advanced features depend on the selected plan. Basic includes 9 avatars, Starter includes more than 125, Creator more than 180 and Enterprise more than 240.

Synthesia pricing and free-plan limits

Pricing was checked in August 2026. Prices are displayed in US dollars.

  • Basic: Free with no credit card required. It includes 1,200 credits per month, which can produce up to about 10 minutes of ordinary avatar video, plus up to 25 AI-generated video assets and access to 9 avatars. Basic is intended mainly for exploring the editor; Starter adds downloadable videos and removal of Synthesia branding.
  • Starter: $29 per month when billed monthly. The annual selector currently displays an equivalent of $18 per month. It includes 1,200 monthly credits or 14,500 annual credits, up to about 10 minutes per month or 120 minutes per year, more than 125 avatars, three Personal Avatars, one editor and three guests.
  • Creator: $89 per month when billed monthly. The annual selector currently displays an equivalent of $64 per month. It includes 3,600 monthly credits or 44,000 annual credits, up to about 30 minutes per month or 360 minutes per year, more than 180 avatars, five Personal Avatars, one editor and five guests. The site's annual price cards and pricing FAQ currently show slightly different annual totals, so buyers should confirm the total displayed at checkout.

How Synthesia credits work

Credits are shared across video generation and other usage-based AI features.

A normal avatar video uses two credits per second, or 120 credits per minute. AI dubbing without lip sync uses 120 credits per minute, while enabling lip sync uses 240 credits per minute. API generation, bulk personalization, AI images and generative video assets use their own rates.

Regenerating a video after adding script, avatar or voice content can consume more credits. Unused credits do not roll into the next billing period, and unused credits from an old plan do not carry over after an upgrade.

This makes the number of included minutes important for teams that expect frequent revisions or multiple localized versions.

Personal Avatars, voice cloning and privacy

Personal Avatars are available on paid plans. A photo-based avatar can use different outfits, backgrounds and avatar B-roll, while a video-based legacy avatar preserves more of the recorded appearance but is less customizable.

Creating an avatar of a real person requires a live consent recording from that same person. Synthesia does not permit creating a Personal Avatar of a public figure or another person without explicit consent.

The process can involve biometric data such as facial geometry and voiceprints. Synthesia says the data is used to generate the avatar, fine-tune the model for that specific avatar, verify that the sample and consent recording belong to the same person, and prevent fraud. Relevant biometric data may remain stored while the avatar is available on the platform. Verification data is normally deleted after the comparison is complete, and third-party verification providers such as AWS may participate in processing.

Customers creating employee, instructor or spokesperson avatars should document free, informed consent and review their own privacy obligations before uploading face or voice samples.

Ownership and commercial licensing

Under Synthesia's current Customer Terms, the customer owns Customer Data, which includes both input and generated output. Synthesia retains ownership of its platform, stock assets and Synthesia Content, while granting customers a license to use that content when it is incorporated into generated videos.

Stock and synthetic avatar videos can be used for training, FAQ and product videos on a website, YouTube uploads and ordinary organic social posts. However, Synthesia does not permit stock avatars in paid, boosted or programmatic advertising, paid social ads or television broadcasts without its express permission.

Custom or Personal Avatars offer broader branded and promotional use, but the customer must have appropriate consent from the person whose face and voice are used. All videos remain subject to the Acceptable Use Policy and content moderation.

Important drawbacks to consider

  • The free tier is primarily an evaluation plan and does not provide the same download and branding controls as Starter.
  • Starter has the same approximate 10-minute monthly generation allowance as Basic; much of its value is in downloads, branding removal, more avatars and collaboration.
  • Credits are consumed by generation and some revisions, and unused credits never roll over.
  • The full creation workspace is desktop-first rather than a complete mobile editor.
  • The platform is optimized for presenter, training and business videos rather than cinematic motion or detailed conventional timeline editing.
  • Stock avatars have strict commercial restrictions, especially for paid advertisements and television.
  • Personal Avatars require face, voice and consent data, and the avatar itself cannot be exported to another provider.
  • Custom Avatars are available only while the account or governing agreement remains active.
  • Content can be automatically or manually moderated and rejected when it conflicts with Synthesia's policies.
  • A Studio Express-1 avatar is a separate annual add-on costing $1,000 and can take up to 10 days to process.

Who is Synthesia best for?

Synthesia is best suited to learning and development teams, sales enablement, customer education, internal communications and organizations that repeatedly update the same information in several languages.

Starter is practical for an individual who needs downloadable, unbranded videos and a few Personal Avatars. Creator is more appropriate for heavier monthly use, interactive content, API workflows and small review teams. Enterprise is aimed at organizations that need unlimited video minutes, SCORM, centralized branding, SSO, governance and broader collaboration.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Synthesia AI avatar generator free?

Yes. The Basic plan includes 1,200 credits per month, up to about 10 minutes of ordinary avatar video, 25 AI-generated video assets and 9 stock avatars. Download, branding and advanced collaboration features are more limited than on paid plans.

How much does Synthesia cost?

Starter costs $29 per month and Creator costs $89 per month when billed monthly. The annual selector currently displays equivalent prices of $18 and $64 per month respectively. Enterprise uses custom pricing. Confirm the final annual amount at checkout because the pricing page's cards and FAQ currently show different totals.

Can Synthesia clone my face and voice?

Yes, on paid plans. A Personal Avatar can be created from a photo or video and paired with a cloned voice. The person must record a live consent video, and creating an avatar of another person without permission is prohibited.

Can Synthesia videos be used commercially?

Yes, for many business uses such as website training, product education and organic social media. Stock avatars cannot be used in paid social, programmatic or television advertising without permission. A properly consented Custom Avatar is required for broader paid promotional use.

Who owns videos generated with Synthesia?

Synthesia's Customer Terms state that the customer owns Customer Data, including generated outputs. Synthesia retains ownership of the platform and stock content and licenses that content for use inside generated videos, subject to the contract and Acceptable Use Policy.

Do Synthesia credits roll over?

No. Unused monthly or annual credits do not carry into the next billing period. Credits from the old plan also do not carry over when upgrading.

What biometric data does a Personal Avatar use?

The creation and consent process can process facial geometry, voiceprints and other measurements. Synthesia uses this information to create the requested avatar, verify consent and prevent misuse. Relevant data may be retained while the avatar remains available.

Can I export a Synthesia avatar to another platform?

No. Generated video output may be downloaded when the plan permits it, but the underlying stock or custom avatar cannot be exported or transferred to another provider.
