What is Descript?

Descript is an AI video editor and podcast editor built around a text-first workflow. Upload or record a conversation, let Descript create a transcript, then cut, reorder, or tighten the media by editing the words. This makes it especially useful for interviews, talking-head videos, tutorials, webinars, podcasts, and other dialogue-heavy content.

Unlike a conventional timeline-first editor, Descript keeps the script, scenes, timeline, audio tools, captions, and collaboration in one workspace. Edit video by editing text

The transcript is connected to the source audio and video. Delete a sentence and the corresponding media is cut; move a passage and the edit follows. A timeline remains available when you need to adjust pacing, layers, scenes, or transitions.

Descript's Underlord co-editor can apply edits from a prompt, add captions and transitions, create clips, work with slides, or translate content. Underlord is still in beta, and Descript says it can make incorrect assumptions or overpromise. Each prompt uses AI credits for reasoning, tool actions can cost additional credits, and the same prompt can cost a different amount on another run. AI voices and avatars

Descript's AI Speech can create narration from a stock voice or a custom voice clone, and Regenerate can repair a spoken mistake without a complete re-recording. Creating a custom AI Speaker requires explicit recorded authorization from the consenting speaker; the consent statement must be recorded in English. Avatars can present a script using a stock voice, a voice clone, recorded audio, or imported audio. You can choose a gallery avatar or create one from a photo, a text prompt, or both. Avatar generation consumes AI credits, and a script or speaker change requires regeneration. Pricing and free-plan limits

Descript is freemium. According to the current official pricing comparison:

• Free: $0; 1 media hour per month, 100 AI credits marked as a one-time allowance, 720p watermark-free export, and limited Underlord, AI tools, AI Speech, and avatars
• Hobbyist: $16 per person/month with annual billing or $24 monthly; 10 media hours and 400 AI credits per month, 1080p export, custom voice clones, and core AI cleanup tools
• Creator: $24 per person/month annually or $35 monthly; 30 media hours and 800 AI credits per month, 4K export, full Underlord access, 20+ AI tools, current video-generation models, and unlimited royalty-free stock access

Media minutes count imported or recorded media processed by Descript, not just the minutes you eventually export. AI generation and automated edits consume a separate credit pool. The detailed plan table labels the Free plan's 100 credits as one-time, even though another Descript product page currently says “per month,” so check the billing screen before relying on recurring credits.

Language support and an important Chinese limitation

Descript currently transcribes 26 languages written in the Latin alphabet. Its supported transcription languages page explicitly says Chinese, Japanese, and Russian are not supported. Each file can contain only one transcription language, and filler-word detection, transcript import and replacement, and the transcription glossary remain English-only.

Descript can translate captions and dub into Chinese, but that is different from transcribing a Chinese source recording. Creators whose raw audio is primarily Mandarin or Cantonese should test another transcription workflow before choosing Descript.

Commercial use, ownership, and privacy

Descript's Terms of Service say it does not claim ownership of user content. Between the user and Descript, inputs and outputs belong to the user to the extent they are protectable by law. AI output may be non-unique, however, and its copyright status is not guaranteed. Users must have the rights and permissions for everything they upload, including voice-training audio and likenesses.

Storyblocks premium media in Descript is licensed for commercial projects under its EULA, but not every integrated library has the same rights. GIPHY GIFs and stickers cannot be used commercially, and logos, trademarks, recognizable people, or other third-party rights may still require clearance. Review the stock-media commercial-use guidance for each asset.

Descript stores project files, transcripts, and metadata on its servers. Its security page says project information is confidential and is not used for advertising or marketing. The Privacy Policy says users can disable Share Data with Descript to opt out of project use for service improvement. It also says AI Speaker training data may be disassociated from an account and used in research datasets, employees or contractors may listen to samples for quality assurance, and avatar facial geometry is processed by vendors. Public projects are no longer treated as confidential.

Who is Descript best for?

Descript is a strong fit for creators and teams editing speech-led English or other supported Latin-alphabet content: podcasters, YouTubers, course creators, marketers, and internal communications teams. It is less suitable for Chinese-source transcription, cinematic color work, advanced visual effects, or projects that need predictable AI costs and frame-perfect control.

How does text-based video editing work in Descript?

Can Descript transcribe Chinese audio?

No. Descript's current help page explicitly says Chinese transcription is not supported. It can translate captions and dub supported source content into Chinese, but it cannot automatically create the initial transcript from a Chinese recording.

Can Descript clone any voice?
