scite Smart Citation and Research Assistant Review
See how scientific papers are supported, contrasted or mentioned

scite is an academic research platform built around Smart Citations. Instead of showing only how often a paper was cited, it analyzes citation statements and labels them as supporting, contrasting or mentioning the cited work. Researchers, students, authors and reviewers can use that context to discover literature, challenge a claim and inspect how later papers treated an earlier result. The labels are useful signals, not automatic judgments of truth or study quality.
Check a claim and its citation context
Start with a paper, DOI, topic or focused question. In a scite report, read the actual citation snippets and open the source papers behind important supporting or contrasting labels. Check where the statement appears, what population and method were used, and whether the later paper truly addresses the same claim. Counts alone can be misleading: one careful replication may matter more than many passing mentions, while a contrasting citation can describe a boundary condition rather than a failed result. The official scite features page explains Smart Citations, full-text search, Assistant, reports, collections and alerts.
For a manuscript, Reference Check can extract references from an uploaded PDF and flag editorial notices or heavily contrasted works. Review every match manually. scite notes that reference recognition depends on PDF and citation format and that sources without a DOI may be missed. Its Reference Check guide also explains that the uploaded PDF is held in a restricted bucket during processing and deleted after the report, while report information is retained. Do not upload confidential manuscripts before checking current policy and institutional requirements.
Subscription and research limits
scite currently sells individual and organization plans and offers a time-limited trial rather than a permanent free tier. Features, credit allowances and renewal terms can change, so read the live scite pricing page before starting a trial or paying. Note the selected plan and cancellation date.
Coverage is broad but not complete, and machine classifications can be wrong. Use scite to prioritize reading, not to replace database searching, appraisal of methods, retraction checks or expert judgment. Preserve the query, date, filters and papers reviewed when the result will support a publication or decision.
Does a supporting Smart Citation prove a paper is correct?
No. It describes the context of one citation statement. Read both papers and assess design, sample, outcome and relevance.
Is scite free?
The current site advertises a limited trial and paid subscriptions. Verify trial conversion, billing period and included credits on the live pricing page.
